Can anything fast-track an SSDI claim?

When you live in North Carolina and apply for Social Security Disability Insurance from the U.S. Social Security Administration, you may find that it takes quite a while to hear anything in response. Many applicants find the application process to be long and tedious. However, there are certain circumstances that may lead the administration to fast-track your claim.

Per AARP, the SSA maintains something called a “Compassionate Allowances” program. This program outlines hundreds of conditions that the administration considers severe enough to warrant pushing your application to the top of the pile.

If you apply for SSDI benefits and your condition is one that the Compassionate Allowances program recognizes, you may get a response to your application within a matter of days, as opposed to a matter of weeks or even months. You also do not have to do anything special when you apply. The program automatically recognizes the condition as one that warrants a compassionate allowance.

Conditions That Warrant A Compassionate Allowance

Several hundred conditions currently appear on the Compassionate Allowances program list. Some of these ailments include malignant multiple sclerosis, ALS and some types of muscular dystrophy. Many cancers also appear on the Compassionate Allowances list. Some of them include pancreatic cancer, certain types of breast and bladder cancer, esophageal cancer and gallbladder cancer, among others.

You may feel as if your condition is one that warrants a compassionate allowance, but you do not see it on the current list of conditions. In this situation, you may ask the SSA to consider your illness for inclusion.
