What amount in monthly SSD benefits will I receive?

Home  /  Blog  /  What amount in monthly SSD benefits will I receive?

Many workers who contemplate seeking Social Security disability (SSD) benefits have so many questions. They know that their medical situation will prevent them from working a long time – at least a year. They wonder whether their ailment qualifies them for these much-needed benefits, too.

But, for them, one of the most important questions is how much money in benefits can they expect each month in SSD benefits? Coming into play are certain factors such as how long you have worked, how long you have paid into the Social Security system as well as your age. You want to make certain that you receive a significant amount to help pay for your and your family’s needs.

Slightly Less Than Full Retirement Benefits

Generally, a monthly SSD benefit equates to an amount slightly less than what you would have received from the Social Security Administration (SSA) had you worked until your
full retirement age.

According to the SSA’s
annual statistical report
published in October, workers received an average monthly SSD benefit of nearly $1,258. Men on average received more than $250 more per month than women. While male workers received $1,384, female workers received $1,128.

Here is a summary of the average dollar amount workers received in SSD benefits in 2019 based on age and gender:

  • People under age 25: $680 for men; $663 for women
  • People ages 25 to 29: $787 for men; $771 for women
  • People ages 30 to 34: $910 for men; $864 for women
  • People ages 35 to 39: $1,016 for men; $959 for women
  • People ages 40 to 44: $1,113 for men; $1,029 for women
  • People ages 45 to 49: $1,216 for men; $1,075 for women
  • People ages 50 to 54: $1,310 for men; $1,108 for women
  • People ages 55 to 59: $1,422 for men; $1,145 for women
  • People ages 60 to 64: $1,553 for men; $1,196 for women
  • People ages 65 and older: $1,609 for men; $1,218 for women

Granted, this time is a bit of a hardship for you and your family. Your ailment may prevent you from ever working again. Where will the money come from to pay bills, medical expenses and other things? SSD benefits may serve as a financial cushion to help you and your family get by as best as you can.
