Clients of an attorney at the Charlotte Social Security disability law office often ask if they are allowed to take a part-time job and keep receiving Social Security disability benefits.

A Charlotte Social Security Disability Attorney Will Explain The Rules Of Working And Receiving Benefits

There are two kinds of benefits you could be receiving. They are:

  1. SSDI benefits or Social Security Disability Insurance; and
  2. SSI or Supplemental Security Income.

A person who is receiving SSI and decides to return to work will have the benefits reduced by the Social Security Administration, or SSA. For every two dollars you make after the initial $65, or $85 if you don’t have any other forms of income, your benefits will be reduced by one dollar. If you lose benefits due to part-time work, you can regain your benefits if your earnings are reduced as long as you didn’t stop getting benefits due to earnings over a period of a full year. After you have ceased receiving benefits for a year, you will have to reapply.

If the earnings are lower than what the SSA refers to as the amount for “substantial gainful activity,” you will receive the same benefits. You can also receive full benefits while you are working in a trial period of nine months.
